Why Is My Hot Water System Leaking Water?

Feb 16, 2023

A leaking hot water system can be a frustrating and costly problem for homeowners by wasting valuable water resources, increasing water bills and potentially even causing damage to your home. In this blog, we'll explore three common causes for hot water system leakage to help you identify any problems with your system.

Corrosion or Cracks

One of the most common causes of a leaking hot water system is corrosion or cracks in the pipes or tank. Over time, the materials used to construct hot water systems can break down due to exposure to water and other elements. This sort of damage can also be caused by growing tree roots, general wear and tear or blockages which create small gaps that allow water to leak out. In some cases, corrosion can also cause the tank to weaken and eventually collapse, leading to more serious damage.

If you suspect that your hot water system is leaking due to corrosion or cracks, have a professional inspect it as soon as possible. In many cases, the damaged pipes or tank will need to be replaced to resolve the issue while in other cases, it may be possible to repair the source. Treatment will depend on the severity of the damage and the type of system you have.

High Water Pressure

Another common reason for a leaking hot water system is high water pressure. High water pressure can cause significant damage to your property, and can result in loose connections, burst pipes and of course, leaks.

If high water pressure turns out to be the problem, a plumber may recommend installing a pressure reducing valve (PRV) to regulate the water pressure in your home. A PRV is a device that is installed in your water supply line and reduces pressure to a safe level. This can help prevent further leaks or damage to your hot water system and other plumbing fixtures in your home.

Untightened Fittings on Pipes

A hot water system typically consists of a network of pipes that carry heated water to different parts of your home. Fittings, which are the joints that connect two or more pipes together, are an essential part of this network. If these fittings become loose, they can cause the hot water system to leak, which can lead to water damage to your home and higher utility bills.

A primary reason why fittings become loose is due to the constant vibrations from the system. This could happen due to water pressure fluctuations, changes in temperature, physical damage or general wear and tear.

Check the fittings on your hot water system regularly to ensure they’re tight and secure. This can be done by visually inspecting the fittings and pipes for any signs of damage, and physically tightening fittings that appear to be loose.

If you notice leaks in your hot water system, address the issue as soon as possible to avoid water damage, mould growth, high water bills and other costly problems. For more advice or to make an enquiry, call Richardson Plumbing & Gas Service on 0417 660 041.
